CLAT UG: Syllabus
Common-Law Admission Test (CLAT) is conducted to admit students to Under Graduate Law programs (LLB.) offered by 22 National Law Universities (NLUs) across India. It is a two hour test which consists of 150 multiple choice questions (MCQs) from the following 5 domains:
- English Language
- Legal Reasoning
- Logical Reasoning
- Quantitative Techniques
- Current Affairs, including General Knowledge
CLAT Syllabus
- English Language:
- Each passage will be nearly 450 words.
- Passages will be based on historical or contemporary topics, either fiction or non-fiction.
- These passages can be read in about 5–7 minutes.
- Each passage is followed by an array of questions which are aimed at evaluating the language and comprehension skills and the following abilities of the candidates:
- Understand the meaning of several phrases and words from the passage
- Draw interfaces based on the passage
- Summarize the passage
- Comprehend the prominent point discussed in the comprehension
- Analyze, compare, and contrast various viewpoints and arguments set out in the comprehension
- Legal Reasoning
- Consists of passages, of nearly 450 words, which pertain to scenarios and situations involving public policy issues, legal matters, or moral physical enquiries.
- Candidates are not required to have any prior knowledge for this section.
- Aspirants must have a general awareness of contemporary moral and legal issues.
- Each passage is followed by a sequence of questions that require candidates to:
- Recognize and deduce the principles and rules discussed in the passage
- Apply such principles and rules to different circumstances
- Comprehend how alterations to the principles or rules may change their application to different situations
- Logical Questions
- Includes short passages, of around 300 words, which are followed by one or more questions that require candidates to:
- Read and recognize the an argument set out in the passage
- Identify the premises and conclusions of an argument
- Critical analysis of reasoning pattern
- Identify the inferences in the passage and apply them to new situations
- Identify equivalences and contradictions, assess the effectiveness of arguments, and draw analogies and relationship
- Quantitative Techniques
- This section includes:
- Sort sets of prepositions or facts
- Graphs
- Textual, diagrammatic, or pictorial representations of numerical information
- Questions following the aforementioned sets require aspirants to:
- Derive, deduce, and manipulate numerical information
- Apply statistical estimation, basic algebra, ratios and proportions, and mensuration concepts, of 10th Class, to solve the questions.
- Current Affairs
- This section consists of passages of around 450 words each
- Passages are derived from non-fiction writing, such as journalistic and news sources.
- Questions are aimed at examining the legal information mentioned in the passage; candidates will not analyze or test any additional legal knowledge beyond the passage.
- Questions aim to evaluate the awareness and knowledge about:
- Arts and culture
- Historical events of continuing significance
- International affairs
- Contemporary events related to India and the world
