IBPS SO Exam: An Overview

The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducts the IBPS Specialist Officer (IBPS SO) Exam to recruit SOs for various positions in the Public Sector Banks (PSBs) in India. The exam aims to recruit Scale I officers for the following departments:

1)  Information Technology (IT)

2)  Agriculture Field

3)  Law

4)  Human Resources (HR)/Personnel

5)  Rajbhasha (National Language)

6)  Marketing

  • The exam format for all these SO posts is conducted through a common format; however, the syllabus is different for every department.

Eligibility Criteria

1)  A candidate must be

  1. A Citizen of India; or
  2. A Subject of Nepal; or
  3. A Subject of Bhutan; or
  4. POI who has migrated from Burma, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Zambia, Zaire, Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, and Ethiopia to India with an intend to permanently settle in the country; or
  5. Tibetan Refugee who came to India before 1st January 1962 with the intent of permanently residing in India.

2)  Age limit:

  1. Minimum age: 20 years
  2. General: Maximum age: 30 years
  3. Relaxation of Upper age limit:
  4. SC/ST: 5 years
  5. OBC: 3 years
  6. PWDs: 10 years
  7. Ex-Servicemen, Commissioned officer (includes Short service Commissioned Officers (SSCOs)/Emergency Commissioned Officers (ECOs) must have served at least 5 years military service: 5 years
  8. Candidates affected by 1984 riots: 5 years
  9. Individuals ordinarily domiciled in J&K state during 1/1/1980–31/12/1989: 5 years

3)  Educational Qualification:

  1. IT Officer:
  2. 4 year B.Tech degree in any domain of IT and Electronics; OR
  3. PG degree in any field of IT and Electronics; OR
  4. Graduate having cleared DOEACC ‘B’ level.
  5. Agriculture Field Officer : 4 year graduation degree in fields of agriculture and related fields.
  6. Rajbhasha Adhikari:
  7. PG in Hindi with English as a subject at the graduation level; OR
  8. PG in Sanskrit with Hindi and English as subjects at the graduation level.
  9. Law Officer: LLB degree + Enrolled as a lawyer with Bar Council
  10. HR/Personnel Officer : Graduate + 2 years full time PG degree or 2 years full time PG diploma in Labour Law/ HR/HRD/Personnel Management/Industrial Relations
  11. Marketing Officer: Graduate+ 2 years full time MMS (Marketing)/ MBA (Marketing)/ 2 years full time PGDM/PGPM/PGDBM/PGDBA with specialization in Marketing

Exam Pattern

1)  There are 3 stages of IBPS SO:

  1. Preliminary Exam
  2. Main Exam
  3. Interview

2)  Preliminary Examination :

  1. Subjects/Sections:
  2. English Language
  3. Reasoning
  4. General Awareness with special emphasis on the Banking industry (for SO Rajbhasha and Law); OR
  5. Quantitative Aptitude (for SO Agriculture, IT, Marketing, and HR/Personnel)
  • Time duration: 120 minutes

3)  Main Examination:

  1. Professional Knowledge ( For Law, Marketing, HR, IT, Agriculture): Objective Questions
  2. Professional Knowledge (Rajbhasha): Objective Questions
  3. Professional Knowledge (Rajbhasha): Descriptive
