UGC NET: An Overview

The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC). The exam is conducted determine the eligibility for Assistant Professorship, or award Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), or both, for the Colleges and Universities of India. The eligibility for Assistant Professorship and awarding of JRF is dependent on the aggregate performance of the candidates in Paper I and Paper II of UGC-NET . Candidates who only qualify for the former are not considered for awarding JRF.

Eligibility Criteria

1)   Candidates should have a Master’s degree or qualified an equivalent examination from an UGC recognized institutions/universities in Humanities and Social Science stream, including languages.

Minimum Percentage for:

General/General-EWS/Unreserved candidates: 55%

SC/ST/OBC belonging to Non-Creamy Layer (OBC-NCL)/PwD/Transgender candidates: 50%

2)   Candidates in the final year of their Master’s or appearing in the final exam of equivalent exam can also appear for UGC-NET provisionally.

3)   The Transgender category candidates have the same qualifying criteria and fee relaxation as that of SC/ST/PwD categories candidates. The subject wise cut-offs for transgender candidates is lowest among the SC/ST/PwD/OBC-NCL candidates in the respective subjects.

4)   Ph.D. degree holders who have completed their Master’s or equivalent exam before 19th September 1991 shall be given a relaxation of 5% in aggregate marks of Master’s for appearing in NET.

5)   Age limit:

For JRF Candidates: <=30 years for General Candidates; 35 years for Women/Transgender/SC/ST/PwD Candidates; 33 years for L.L.M. degree holders; relaxation of up to 5 years for individuals who have served in armed forces, depending on the term of their service.

For Assistant Professor: No upper age limit

 Exam Pattern

1)   UGC-NET is a Computer Based Test (CBT).

2)   The exam is conducted twice a year.

3)   The exam consists of two papers: Paper I and Paper II

4)   Total Number of Questions: 150 (Paper I- 50 questions; Paper II- 100 questions)

5)   Time duration: 3 hours/180 minutes

6)   Language of questions: English and Hindi

7)   Marking scheme: +2 marks for correct answer; No negative marking
